!! VICTORIAN FAYRE CANCELLED !!

We are really sorry, this was the last thing we wanted to do, but we regret to advise that due to the massive increase in Covid-19 cases over the last two days we have had to make the very difficult decision to cancel our Victorian Fayre this Sunday, 19th December.

We genuinely share your disappointment not least because we have invested a lot of time and effort into organising this event, therefore we want to reassure you that this decision was not taken lightly, but as always, the health and safety of our volunteers, traders and the general public is our highest priority and we feel this is the responsible thing to do.

We appreciate some may not understand our decision since we are an outdoor event, but it appears we have returned to uncertain times with this new variant and as an organisation we cannot put the lives of our community at risk and hope that you can respect how difficult it was to come to this decision.

We look forward to being able to successfully run our 2022 events.

In the meantime, please stay safe, look after each other and thank you so much for all your support.

Let me express my disappointment that yet again you unilaterally considered it necessary to cancel a potentially exciting event for Shepton Mallet, which would have had the perfect weather for it and attracted hundreds of participants, like the lantern parade did fewer than 16 hours before!

Whom did you ask about this decision? I heard no positive voice about this decision form any potential trader, but many complaints about their efforts in preparation having been frustrated.

Did you poll your volunteers?

Your decision to cancel an outside event that people would have attended out if their own volition and for the blocking of which there exists no government advice let alone regulation infantilises your potential clients. You give Shepton Malllet a bad name, as people do not understand who cancelled this event and as this short notice cancellation has not happened for the first time.
Your ‘Shepton Mallet Experience’ is not mine nor would I want it to be.

Dear Kai-Thomas Roth

Thank you for your comment. We believe our statement explains our decision for the cancellation of the Victorian Fayre and as a business we have nothing further to add with regards to our decision-making process.

Most of our traders, although disappointed, were in total agreement and fully supported our decision to cancel. There were however a very small minority who disagreed, but we could not, in all good conscience, go ahead with the event based on a minority opinion. We believe we made the correct decision based on the information available at the time which has been backed by the numerous private messages we received thanking us for putting the health and safety of our community at the forefront of our decision. One such message concluded that the public disappointment only emphasised what a great job we had done previously to make our events so popular.

The only previous events which had been cancelled were the Snowdrop Market in February 2020 due to Storm Dennis. A decision which was made by the Snowdrop Festival organisers, to which we agreed. The other was our Mad March event due to take place on the 29th March 2020. This was cancelled following the Government enforced lockdown which did not permit us to run. There have been no other last-minute cancellations since the market has been run by our company.

As an organisation our priority will always be the health and safety of participants and visitors whether these decisions prove to be popular or otherwise. We hope that the uncertain times due to Covid-19 reduce to allow us to run safely in 2022.

Kind Regards
